On 9th August the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the most detailed and alarming projections on climate change, leading the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres to state: “Today’s report is a Code Red for humanity. The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people at immediate risk.” Much has been written about climate change, but there is an understanding that climate change and biodiversity loss are intrinsically linked – this is a twin crisis. Both COP15 in October and COP26 in November will address biodiversity loss; now more than ever there is a recognition that it is time to act against biodiversity loss.
