GRADUATE RECRUITMENT

Our Programmes

At Citi we offer a wealth of opportunities for talented graduates. We recognise that some of you will have a clear idea that a career in banking is right for you, while some will be unsure and just starting your career search. Whatever stage you're at, we have a programme for you.

First-Year Programmes

If you are a first-year student in a three-year degree course or a second-year student in a four-year course, our insight programmes could be perfect for you. We have three for you to choose from:

  • Citi Scope is a three-day programme where you can explore what investment banking is all about. It will enhance your knowledge of different business areas, and give you the skills to help you get through the assessment process at Citi. You'll also have the opportunity to meet and network with teams across different business areas. It's an ideal introduction to our sector and our business.
  • If you know that banking is for you, but would like some insight into a particular business area, then Citi Quest is a one-week spring programme that does exactly that. Here, you're placed in a specific business area and will get a real-life taste of what it's like to be part of that team.
  • We are focused on recruiting more women into banking. Our Women of Tomorrow programme is designed to provide female students with an insight into the different career paths within banking. You will meet women from across Citi and get involved in hands-on workshops designed to help you understand the skills necessary for a successful career.

Summer Analysts

At Citi, the main way we identify the very best talent is through our Summer Internship Programme. These paid programmes are aimed at students in their penultimate year (but don't worry if you're not, we don't like to turn away any exceptional candidates) and run for eight to ten weeks over the summer. You'll be exposed to a mixture of training, social events and work experiences. At the end of the internship we offer the best people a role with us starting after graduation. Internships are available for both Analysts (undergraduate and Master's students) and Associates (MBA students).

Summer Associate

If you have one year left in your MBA, our ten-week Summer Associate Programme is a great way to see first-hand what Citi is all about. You'll participate in a week-long comprehensive training course, and then jump right into the role of a Associate. You'll be able to take advantage of programmes like our Speaker Series as well as our formal mentoring programme. When you're through, you'll be in a great position to move into our Associate Programme.

Placements

Similar to the summer programmes, our placements are long-term internships of between six and 11 months that really put you at the heart of our business.

Analyst Programme

If you're in your last year of your undergraduate or Master's degree, our Analyst Programme could be perfect for you. We're looking for bright, accomplished, highly motivated candidates with outstanding communication skills and a true passion for business. Our in-depth training programme, mentorship opportunities, and senior management and client interactions will help launch you on your career path as a Citi Analyst.

Associate Programme

Our Associate Programme is aimed at MBA students in their final year. We're looking for graduates with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. It's your experience from your career so far that we think gives you a wider perspective, a deeper insight and a more strategic approach to growing our business. Our intensive training programme is run by some of the best minds in the business — a combination of this, your existing experience and senior executive exposure means we're confident you'll flourish here.

PhD Opportunities

If you are a PhD or hold a Master's Degree in a mathematical discipline, then our Markets Mathematical Finance programme offers placements and positions in Quantitative Analysis, Structuring or Exotics Trading.

Capital Markets Origination

Analyst

Overview — what’s it like?
Our Analyst Programme lasts for 3 years. We start in August/early September with an interactive and intensive training course to get you up to speed as quickly as possible. You won’t just be sitting and listening – you’ll be rolling your sleeves up and getting involved.

Once your initial training is done, you will join the business and rotate across the different teams before you find your place within one of them. Here are some examples of the type of work you could be given as an analyst:

Market Analysis: Our understanding of particular markets is key to Citi’s success. Analysts will learn to study the markets within which we operate, they will present research and analysis to senior colleagues as well as directly to clients.

Issue Pricing: Getting pricing right is key to Citi remaining competitive. Issuers will naturally be attracted to the firm that offers to raise funding at the lowest cost. Analysts will be responsible for helping to analyse the main drivers of pricing and then determine the levels offered to the client.

Investor Communication: Critical to the success of every deal and transaction is understanding the views and needs of investors. Analysts also talk to current shareholders about their opinion on a company's performance and strategy.

Presentation Preparation: In addition to performing Market Analysis, Issue Pricing and Investor Communication, CMO Analysts must collate and present this information in an easy-to-understand format for the client. While senior colleagues will assist and give direction, Analysts take the lead in producing a professional document presentable to a CEO or head of state.

Administration: You’ll be required to co-ordinate multiple work streams, deadlines and deliverables. This will involve project managing internal working teams, external working teams (such as lawyers) and the client.

Is your place here?
CMO has a lot in common with both the Investment Bank and the Sales & Trading businesses, providing a unique position and strategic outlook for someone to start their career. We therefore look for the following qualities in our analyst:

  • Strong academic performance
  • Natural communicators who build strong relationships
  • An ability to stay calm and work under pressure
  • A teamwork ethic that drives success from every individual
  • Genuine desire for constant challenge
  • Linguistic skills — in a global environment, this can be an advantage
  • High levels of drive, initiative and adaptability

Summer Analyst

Overview — what's it like?
Every year we run a Summer Analyst Programme for ten weeks in our London office. It usually runs from the end of June to the end of August.

You'll start the programme with a week of training, alongside other summer interns, which introduces you to Citi as a whole. This gives you:

  • An overview of the key processes you should know as a new Citi employee
  • An introduction to Global Financial Markets — here, you discover the main business areas and the "ins and outs" of an investment bank. You'll also get to know Citi's products and services
  • You'll complete two rotations across our CMO teams — what these are will depend on what you’d like to do and what our business needs are at the time. However, as we go through the summer together, we’ll keep providing training and networking opportunities so you explore and develop an in-depth knowledge of CMO and what it’s like to work at Citi. There’s plenty on offer to help you (and us) get the most value from your time here including:
    • Weekly product-based talks from senior people

    • A "buddy" to give you informal support and advice

Is your place here?
This is the first key step in becoming an Analyst in CMO, so we're looking for the same qualities in our summer interns. Have a look at our guidance on the Analyst page.

Analyst

Overview – what's it like?
We start at the end of August with a 5-week training programme. This is designed to get you up to speed as quickly as possible; it’s a very practical programme so you’ll really be rolling up your sleeves and getting involved. At the end of this training you will have:

As well as the variety of work within the rotations, we also provide mid and end of programme training, which boosts your knowledge of credit and market risk, action selling and enhancing your personal impact. At the end of the programme, you should feel confident and qualified to take on navigating the fast-paced, multi-national corporate environment at Citi.

Is your place here?
There’s a huge range of roles here — our analysts will contribute directly to the growth of this exciting business, and be part of a very high-performing team. As part of the programme, we’ll provide the ongoing learning and development you’ll need to gain superior financial knowledge and serve clients to the best of your ability. When we recruit, we welcome applications from all backgrounds and embrace diversity.

However, in our experience, the most talented candidates will have:

  • An excellent academic background
  • High levels of drive, initiative and adaptability
  • Fun ways of solving problems creatively
  • A balance of independence with a strong teamwork ethic

If you’re applying for a role outside London, you need to be fluent in the language of the country you’re applying to work in — good communication is essential to our global team. Additionally, as our programme runs across EMEA, should the opportunity arise to relocate at some stage in the programme, we hope you’d be delighted to do so.

Associate

Overview – what's it like?
This programme is intended for MBA graduates with substantial work experience already under their belt. We want our Associates to get a solid understanding of the Citi Transaction Services (Transaction Services) business. As such, we have a 28-month Associate Programme to challenge talented individuals. At Citi we realise our most important resource is our people, so you’ll notice we put a lot of emphasis on networking, mentoring and socialising throughout your programme.

You’ll start with initial training in London for a week of Transaction Services core product training that covers the fundamentals of both Treasury and Trade Solutions and Securities and Fund Services. You will focus on all things Transaction Services — you’ll deliver a solution to a Transaction Services case study, and explore how to enhance your personal impact.

Once your initial training is done, you’ll rotate within Product and Sales, and whilst you’re doing so you may well get to move to different places in EMEA.

What will I learn?
There’s a lot to learn as an Associate, but here’s a small sample of the kinds of things you’ll be doing:

Strategic projects
These build up your skills in analysing various industries and the trends within them. You’ll learn to identify gaps and areas of need within a client’s value chain, and how to apply the Transaction Services products to form a compelling solution.

Client involvement
You’ll get the chance to be involved in all aspects of the client relationship (from account planning to deals) so you get a deep understanding of the client’s business. You’ll work with the Client Managers and add-value by assessing synergies in the market and the client’s industry – and our clients are from every industry, so the variety is practically limitless.

Compliance Projects
These are important, large-scale projects that often involve the whole of EMEA’s Client Management team. During your training, you’ll bring your project management and prioritisation skills to the fore, as well as communicating with senior stakeholders a key way to make an impact.

Product Teams
You’ll get the chance to focus on particular products — gathering data and exploring how they can be enhanced. You’ll also generate ideas for new product development to add to our portfolio, as your understanding of Transaction Services grows.

Is your place here?
Our Associate Programmes are extremely important to us, and as such we invest heavily in them during the recruitment process and beyond. Your development opportunities will keep you up to date and provide you with superior financial knowledge, as well as enabling fantastic client relationships.

We welcome applications from all backgrounds and celebrate diversity — especially at Associate level where you have some years of experience to bring to the role, giving you a different perspective.

We run summer internship programmes for both Analysts and Associates. Both start with in-depth training which covers the fundamental skills you’ll need to get started [including financial accounting, corporate finance, analytics, cash flow modelling, risk and credit analysis, and capital markets]. Once you’ve got the basics broadly covered, you will go straight into learning on the job and working as if you were an Analyst or Associate. There is plenty on offer to support you in getting the most from your time here including:

  • Interactive talks from senior people in the business
  • Social and networking opportunities
  • A "buddy" to give you informal support and advice

Our Summer Associate programme is for MBA students, and strong performance could lead to a place on the Associate Programme the following year.

Associate

Overview — What will you be doing?
This programme is intended for MBA graduates with substantial work experience already under their belt. The programme itself will commence with an interactive and intensive training course. The training is very hands-on and includes case studies, presentations and hands-on projects. You’ll cover the fundamentals of financial accounting, corporate finance, analytics, cash flow modelling, risk and credit analysis, and capital markets so you can go straight into working with your team.

Associates are the linchpins of project teams – you will be responsible for everything from day-to-day project management of M&A and capital markets deals, to helping develop long-term strategies for our corporate clients. Whichever team you join, you’ll be working closely with industry experts, senior country bankers, capital markets and other product specialists. You will become the knowledge expert on your projects, driving everything forward from idea generation, detailed financial analysis, processes management and client presentation. You will work directly with your clients and help to strengthen that relationship too. An Associate position within our Investment Banking division is a key stepping stone to future senior banking roles.

Placements

We also offer Analysts 6-month placements starting in April and October. As with the summer programme, it starts with a week of intensive training to cover the banking fundamentals, and then you will get straight into working within an Investment Banking team. Similar to the Summer Analyst programme, you will be evaluated during the placement for a full-time role.

The rest of the training will be specific to you and the core CPB products.

Once your initial training is done, you'll complete three rotations across CPB core business groups) — broadly "Product", "Banking" and "Business Support". This breadth is designed specifically to prepare you with the skills and product knowledge to move to a role where you can really add value from day one.

Sales and Trading

Click on the selections above for roles available.

Analyst

Overview — what’s it like?
We start in late August/early September with an interactive and intensive training course. We want to get you up to speed as quickly as possible, so you won’t just be sitting and listening — you’ll be rolling your sleeves up and getting involved.

Once your initial training is done, you will join the division and rotate across different teams (Fixed Income, Equities, Currency and Commodities) before you find your place at a "desk". Although we have to factor in the business requirements at any particular time, we’ll do our best to allocate you in your preferred position.

What will I learn?

Technical skills
As you’ve probably gathered by now, there’s quite a lot of technical detail to master when you first start. Don’t worry, we invest heavily in making sure you get the very best training on all of this (from external consultants as well as Citi’s own experts). We do need you to pass some exams, but you’ll be very well-prepared.

External assessment from the Financial Services Authority (FSA)
The FSA requires all banking professionals in our area to reach a certain standard. As part of your Analyst programme, we prepare you to pass your SII exam so you’re fully FSA approved. The support we will give you includes tutorials, mock exams and guidance for self-study.

What happens at the end my graduate programme?
Even once you’re placed in a team, you’ll continue to learn and grow. We provide an analyst portal which you’ll always have access to, which contains several resources to support you as you continue your career. We offer a huge amount of learning and development opportunities via our internal Business University too, so you are continually developing.

Is your place here?
In our division, the words "dynamic" and "exciting" are only starting points. Our analysts need to adapt quickly if they’re going to thrive in an extremely fast and often intense environment. There’s a huge variety of roles on offer, so there’s no typical "Sales & Trading Analyst" — we recruit from many different backgrounds.

We do look for a few key qualities in our Analysts:

  • Strong academic performance (and for certain Trading desks, we prefer you to have a PhD)
  • High levels of drive, initiative and adaptability
  • Passion for the markets — you may not understand it all yet, but you need to be eager, curious and develop your understanding of the industry
  • Integrity and ethical decision making

In addition, here are some of the things we admire in our best analysts:

  • Natural communicators who build strong relationships
  • An ability to stay calm and work under pressure
  • Creative thinkers who are also highly numerate
  • A teamwork ethic that drives success from every individual
  • Genuine desire for constant challenge
  • Linguistic skills — in a global environment, this can be an advantage

Analyst

Overview — what's it like?
With both programmes, we aim to fully support your future development. We hope to see you shine as you direct your energy and intellect to make the most of the opportunities available. The programme runs over three years, and during that time you'll rotate through COE and Business Partner teams. At the end of the programme, and subject to your performance, we will work with you to find a full-time opportunity within HR. The ongoing development, coaching and networking opportunities will give you a solid and successful career with us.

How is the programme structured?
We start with classroom-based training to give you a clear overview of the business. For the HR Rotation programme, you’ll have the opportunity to rotate through some of our business areas including Diversity and Employee Relations, Talent, Resourcing and Learning, Reward and Mobility, Diversity, and our Business Partner areas. During your rotations, we continue your development with project work, personal skill building and mentoring. For the HRSS programme, it is the same, however, rotations will be in Re-engineering and Projects, Communications, Employee Engagement and Talent, Technology, User-interface, Automation and Workflow, Business Management, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and Risk and Compliance.

Who we’re looking for — is your place here?
There are a few key qualities that we admire in the HR Analysts who really excel:

  • Ethics, integrity and responsibility
  • Passion for the field of HR
  • Strong academic performance
  • Willingness to be geographically mobile across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA)
  • Strong communication and language skills
  • Creative problem-solving skills — after all, people are complicated
  • Fantastic relationship-building skills — we need to know our people inside-out
  • Good team working skills with the initiative to work independently
  • Natural leadership qualities
  • Resilience with an ever-changing environment

Summer Analyst

Overview — what’s it like?
Every year we run a Summer Analyst Programme for ten weeks across our EMEA regional hubs, either in HRSS or the HR Rotational Programme. It usually runs from the end of June to the end of August.

You’ll start the programme with training alongside the rest of our summer interns, which introduces you to Citi as a whole. This gives you:

  • An overview of the key processes you should know as a new Citi employee
  • An introduction to Global Financial Markets and Citi – here, you discover the main business areas and the ‘ins and outs’ of a bank. You’ll also get to know Citi’s products and services to help you understand Citi as a whole
  • Presentations from specific parts of the business
  • A chance to try out your team-building skills with a teamwork event

How is the programme structured?

You’ll get placed into one of our business areas for the ten weeks, depending on your profile and what we need at the time. However, as we go through the summer together, we’ll keep providing training and networking opportunities to help you develop an in-depth knowledge of Citi as a whole — and what it’s like to work here.

There’s plenty on offer to help you (and us) get the most value from your time here, including:

  • Weekly business presentation series
  • Networking opportunities with senior managers
  • Intern-wide social events
  • A "buddy" to give you informal advice and support (and someone to have lunch with)

Is your place here?
This is a key first step to becoming an Analyst in HR, so we're looking for the same qualities from our summer interns.

Analyst

Overview — what's it all about?
We have positions in key hubs of Belfast, Budapest, Poland and Dublin, as well as other major cities — it's worth checking the website regularly.

When you start with us, we aim to give you a solid foundation of skills in your first year, starting with a comprehensive induction programme which explores the essential role Operations plays at Citi. You then go on to uncover the secrets of financial markets, trade lifecycles and project management. We want to support you in your transition from the academic to the corporate life (which can be quite a change), so we keep everything interesting with practical activities mixed in with classroom training and business presentations from the people in the know.

What will I learn?

Even after your training, your development continues. We'll support you through your career with recommended e-learning, project tasks, buddy and mentoring schemes, networking events and a business speaker series. After your first year with us, we help you plan the development and career paths that you want to take — so you can take advantage of the huge range of opportunities available.

Is your place here?

Summer Analyst and longer term placements

Overview — what's it like?
Every year we run Summer Analyst Programmes for ten weeks, usually starting at the end of June. These are in Poland, Budapest, Dublin and London.

You'll start with a comprehensive induction, alongside our other summer interns from the rest of the Bank, covering the key processes you need to know as a Citi employee and the role Operations & Technology plays in the wider context of the organisation. You'll also meet seniors from O&T, which will give you a chance to learn more about the different functions in our area. Following your training, you'll join a team in Operations and get to grips with the project or projects you'll be working on.

While you're working on your project(s), you'll have plenty of resources to help you (and us) get the most from your time here, including:

  • A business speaker series
  • Networking opportunities with senior managers
  • Intern-wide social events
  • A formal evaluation process to help us (and you) determine if you're suitable for a position on our Analyst Programme
  • A "buddy" for informal support and advice

Is your place here?
Remember this is a key first step in becoming an Analyst in Operations, so we're looking for the same qualities in our summer interns. Have a look at our guidance on the Analyst page.

Longer-term placement opportunities:
We also have a limited number of six- to eleven-month placements in Belfast and London, where you'll benefit from the same opportunities as our Summer and/or full-time Analysts.

Financial Management

Click on the selections above for roles available.

Associate

Overview — what's it like?
This programme provides Financial Management Associates (FMAs) with a series of challenging assignments as you rotate through three of our many finance areas. You'll have the opportunity to work closely with senior finance managers in our key areas including: Financial Planning and Analysis, Treasury, Controllers, Strategy and M&A.

What makes the FMA programme unique is the cross-business exposure it will give you. For example you might have six months in Citi Strategy assessing our next acquisition, followed by six months in Financial Planning for one of our biggest sectors, and then learning how money is moved at Citi by spending six months in a Treasury function.

And there's more. Every FMA is paired with a senior mentor who will guide and support you through the programme. These professionals volunteer their time, so they've got a strong commitment to helping out our future leaders.

With us you'll develop a broad, global perspective, both professionally and personally. You can even choose where you'd like to be based, from a range of locations including London, EMEA, NA (New York City), Asia, LATAM and Japan.

Key features of the programme?
As you can see from the overview, it's a packed programme. There are some further key features we'd like to tell you about though:

  • Access — FMAs start at the top. You'll be working directly with our senior Finance leaders and carefully selected managers who will help you maximise your potential and develop your careers. You'll be learning from the people who shape Citi Finance every day.
  • Global Reach — our team is comparatively small, so your global network will be a key asset. After you select your region from the four major global sites, you'll still get to move around with one of your three rotations on an assignment in a different location.
  • Leadership — as an FMA, you'll be viewed as the pipeline for future finance leaders of Citi. We'll consistently encourage you to develop your management skills as you go through your rotations.
  • Responsibility & Empowerment — our FMAs contribute from day one. You will be part of the action and face the challenges of this analytical and dynamic financial environment. We'll encourage you to take ownership of your work, your learning, and your career.

What happens after my programme?
After you've completed your rotations, you're likely to take Vice President-level financial positions with us. These ultimately lead to important leadership roles within Citi businesses. The FMA programme is a fantastic launching point for a fast-track and successful career path in finance.

Is your place here?
We value individuals who are committed to excellence in whatever they do, and who have a sense of urgency and excitement; thriving in competition and challenge. You do need to have an MBA with a concentration in Accounting, Finance or Economics and 3-5 years of related work experience.

The skills we admire in our best FMAs are:

  • A passion for a broad and increasingly demanding career in financial management
  • A keen interest for regular, diverse assignment opportunities and new business challenges across EMEA
  • Plenty of initiative, creativity, risk-taking (at the right level) and business-building
  • Resilience for the changing, competitive world we work in
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • The natural ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Fluency in different languages (not mandatory but certainly an advantage)

You'll start with a week of intensive classroom training covering Citi orientation, a finance overview and a key speaker series — so you're hearing directly from those in the business. You'll see how we're structured, and how we link with the Institutional Clients Group.

After training, you'll get straight into working with your pre-assigned team. Which area you work in depends on the business needs at the time, but wherever it is you'll be adding value to real life projects immediately. Our top Summer Associates will be considered for the FMA programme.

Who we're looking for — Is your place here?
This is the ideal step in your path to the FMA programme, so we look for the same qualities in our Summer Interns. Check out the FMA page for guidelines.

You'll go into a preassigned team in one of our Risk divisions (Institutional Clients Group or Consumer Bank) and may be working in different functions — from Market Risk, to Credit Risk, to Risk Capital. The type of position and what you need to deliver will vary according to where you end up and what we need in the business at the time.
